Be selective when taking your photos. Find exactly what you want in that photo, and remove anything else from the shot. If you’re trying to take a picture of a flower, you don’t want a bunch of other flowers or trees in the shot. Get as close and focused on the subject as possible to get the best possible photo.
Use a diffuser to minimize the negative effects of flash photography. The built-in flash on most cameras produce photos that have a high light-dark contrast, which makes them look harsh and unrealistic. A diffuser diffuses the light from the flash, distributing it more evenly and making your flash photos look more natural.
When aiming for the perfect shot, remember to keep sunlight in mind. Too little and you can’t see the subject. Too much and one of two things happen. The first is that too much sunlight is directed into the camera’s lens or on the subject and washes out the picture. The second is the person being photographed has to blink or close his eyes because of the massive amounts of sunlight coming into his eyes.
Don’t stay inside when the weather is bad. Although it’s natural to think a sunny day is the best time to grab the camera, overcast and rainy days provide an opportunity to get shots that would be hard to get at any other time. These weather conditions can give shots that would look neutral or cheery on a sunny day a dark and foreboding tone.
Use a rather low ISO. A good ISO is around 200. Using this range of ISO will make your pictures look dark in certain situations, but you can easily change the contrast and light on a computer. If you use a higher ISO, you will get a lot of noise on your picture, which makes editing harder.
Don’t rely too heavily on image-editing software. It’s a great tool to have, but if you rely on it too much, your photographs will start to look highly artificial. Try to achieve what you want before bringing it into image-editing software.
You should always enjoy taking pictures. Your photos should be a capsule of a particular time and place in your life. Leave yourself some “Lead Room” or “Active Space” when dealing with subjects that move in your shots. This is just basically some empty space either in front of the subject or behind the subject. This makes for a less-cluttered and more pleasing action shot for the viewer to look at.
Pay attention to clothing worn by the subjects in your photographs, particularly shirts. If at all possible make sure they are free from logos and prominent commercial advertising. Logos date a photograph and remove the “classic” feeling that is treasured in years to come. They also seriously clash with natural landscaping in outdoor environments.
